Let's Talk Legacy Through Ambition.
May 07, 2024Hey, Queen!
Let's talk about women's success and ambitions, because honestly, it's still complicated, and it shouldn't be.
What am I talking about when I say this. I am addressing how women often don't tout their achievements as loudly as men do. It's like there's this unwritten rule that we should be sweet, quiet, and helpful, but not too bold or ambitious because then we're labeled as aggressive or dramatic. It's what's called the double bind, and it's been around for ages.
But in today's world, we are making progress.
Slowly but surely, we're breaking out of those old molds. Take Taylor Swift's words, for instance. She nails it when she points out the different standards men and women face in the music industry.
So, why are we still having this conversation in 2024?
Because change takes time, but organizations like True Mpowerment for Women are empowering women to continue pushing through these barriers. They're all about rewriting the rules and encouraging women to embrace their ambitions through collaboration & influence.
And you know what? Ambition, drive, elite, powerful... they aren't dirty words.
Reese Witherspoon said it best, in 2015, "We need to believe in ourselves, love ourselves, and own our successes." & this still stands true today where women are breaking the mold and filling our cups first! I mean take Serena Williams, Rhianna, Amy Schumer, Glennon Doyle, Ciara, —they're all about self-motivation, discipline, and empowerment - while still raising a family!
But let's not get ahead of ourselves and get real for a minute. Women often, still, hesitate to speak up, especially in male-dominated spaces. I, Tara Wood, still work in a very male-dominated industry, Technology Consulting, & let me tell you, when I first entered this world I was teaching myself to stay silent due to being the ONLY woman in the room! Today research shows that those who speak up the most tend to be seen as the most influential. And yeah, historically, that's been men. But it's time for us to change that narrative.
It's about moving past our fears—fear of failure, fear of not being liked, fear of not being good enough. Elizabeth Banks summed it up perfectly: You don't get what you don't ask for. So, raise your hand, speak up, and own your space. I always say, after "teaching myself to stay silent" you miss 100% of the shots you don't take and that includes speaking up in a room full of men, even if they don't agree with you!
Something I also want to point out is, Women are those who build real empires at home. We build the next generations to come. Studies show that young girls start doubting themselves at a shockingly young age. We MUST be their role models, showing them that they can be anything they want to be. Empowering their voices & passions. We are in a world of opportunity - it's time to strike.
Join the movement with True Mpowerment for Women and let's be ravenous-ambitious - together.
